April is shaping up to be a month filled with music and art as concerts, recitals and exhibitions fill the calendar.
Premiering today is “Friday Fling” featuring Musical Theatre Assistant Professor Tim Fitz-Gerald and his wife, Brenda Jean Hamilton. The event will be available on the college’s YouTube channel, beginning at 8 p.m.
The couple, who will be performing Broadway songs from across the eras, have impressive stage credentials.
“I’ve performed on Broadway, off Broadway and in several national tours,” Fitz-Gerald said. “I appeared opposite Hugh Jackman in ‘The Boy From Oz,’ as well as in ‘Wicked,’ ‘Titanic the Musical,’ ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,’ ‘The Rocky Horror Show,’ ‘Reefer Madness’ and ‘The Wind in the Willows.’”
Hamilton, who teaches dance at the college, started her career as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall. She also has been on Broadway and in several national tours, including “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Some Like it Hot,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “A Chorus Line” and “Wicked.”
“Brenda and I actually met doing ‘Joseph,’” he said. “We were fortunate enough to perform in the first national tour of ‘Wicked’ together from 2011 through 2015. During that time, we had our daughter Maira.”
Fitz-Gerald said he is pleased with “Friday Fling” and hopes viewers will enjoy it as much as he and Hamilton did while making it.
“It was so much fun working on stage together again,” he said.
Broadway, country and pop will be spotlighted April 9 and 10 as Musical Theatre, Theatre and Music students take
the stage for “Sing!”
The collaborative showcase will be at 7 p.m. in Callaway Auditorium, with all COVID protocols such as social distancing and masks required.
The show was conceived and created by Kim Barber Knoll, Theatre Arts Professor; Dr Andrea Jarmon, Voice Instructor; and Ken Passmore, Assistant Professor of Music.
“We were thrilled with the enthusiastic response to our fall and spring live theatrical productions, and we wanted to keep the momentum going,” said Barber Knoll.
“I think we have put together something fun and different that will feel fresh, a little poignant and certainly appropriate to the time," said Dr. Jarmon. "You will laugh, you may cry, but you will not walk away disappointed, that is for sure.”
Passmore added, “While the Callaway stage has sat empty for over a year, we have come up with a creative way to bring that stage back to life that is safe for the audience as well as the performers. There is a wide variety of musical styles that will appeal to all ages."
The musical Vocalists, musicians and composers will be the stars at “Concert in the Park-ing Lot” at 1 p.m. on April 17 in Music’s parking lot at West Side.
Dr. Toni Anderson, Chair of Music, said the warmer spring weather would be perfect for an outdoor concert.
“A lot of what we’ve done this year has been virtual, so we thought this would be a great opportunity for our students to perform before a live audience.”
The concert will be held on the city’s Showmobile set up in the parking lot. Dr. Anderson said it will run almost like a music festival. 
“There will be back-to-back acts featuring a great variety of student talent in the Music program,” she said. “While changing the stage set-up between acts, we will play pre-recorded works by our student composers.”
Performers will include the LC Percussion Ensemble, Ken Passmore, director; LC Singers, Dr. Samuel Miller, director; woodwind and brass players, directed by Dr. Alina Windell and Dr. Mark Dulin; string quartet, Celeste Myall, director; and vocalists singing everything from opera to musical theater selections.
Dr. Anderson said spaced out parking slots will be available first come, first served for parents, family members, suite mates and any group of people who feel comfortable sitting together.
“Audience members can also choose to sit in the grassy field behind the lot,” she said. “Everyone should take their own lawn chair and bottled water, and parking will be provided at Lamar Dodd Art Center and Price Theater.”
The LaGrange Symphony Youth Orchestra under the direction of Adjunct Professor Celeste Myall will perform on the Showmobile at 4 p.m. April 18.
Senior recitals will kick off this week with soprano Joely Peterman at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Callaway Auditorium. Tyra Crowe will present her organ recital at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church on the Square.
The following week will include a junior composition recital featuring Isaiah McCrina and Garrett Lehman at 4:30 p.m. April 13 in Callaway Auditorium, while performances by composers Tyra Crowe and Mikayla Drake will be at 4:30 p.m. April 20 and instrumentalist students at 4:30 p.m. April 27, both at Callaway Auditorium.
Although Lamar Dodd Art Center remains closed to the public, the annual senior exhibition will feature the works of Kat Juskus, Autumn Patrick, Tuesday Gardner, Christine Alexis Williams, Alexis Westrick, Ashleigh Hall and Aly Lord.
“Family and friends of the seniors will be able to make appointments to view the exhibition,” said Marcia Brown, Chair of Fine and Performing Arts. “They can call us at 706-880-8211 to arrange a visit.”
The ringing of the Chapel Bell is a new tradition offered only to graduating seniors to celebrate a first full-time, post-graduation job offer or admission to grad school. Congratulations to these students on their accomplishments: Sydney Bourque (Nursing), offered a full-time job as a staff nurse at Children's of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama; Katelyn Cannon (Nursing), offered a full-time job as a labor and delivery registered nurse at Piedmont Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Georgia; Porter Law (Political Science), accepted into the Public Administration graduate program at the University of North Florida Jacksonville, Florida; and Destiny Johnson (Nursing), offered a full-time job as a registered nurse at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers will hold a virtual statewide career fair from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday. LC’s Center for Leadership and Career Development is partnering with more than 40 colleges and universities across Georgia this year to host the event. Registration is required.

Men’s Soccer
The Panthers (2-4) finished their season with a 3-2 win over Piedmont last Friday at Panther Field. It was the second straight win against Piedmont for the LaGrange College men’s soccer program.
Volleyball
The Panthers (5-3, 4-1 USA South) dropped their first conference match, losing 3-0 to Maryville last Sunday in Mariotti Gym. LC also lost 3-0 to the Scots in the non-conference match. Freshman Journey Oden had a total of 14 kills in the two matches.
Baseball
The Panthers (8-6) lost two of three games to Piedmont last weekend at Cleaveland Field. LC won 5-4 on Friday, then lost 14-10 and 6-4 on Saturday. Freshman pitcher Dalton Brooks struck out a career-high 12 batters in the 6-4 loss.
